Last Meeting

Members attended the last meeting on Sunday, September 11 at 4:00 p.m. at Rock Quarry House where Tom Ott gave a presentation on Harlequin phalaenopsis. Included his presentation was discussion and description of the original observation of the flower pattern (called Harlequin) on a plant named P. Golden Poeker 'Brother' AM 81 in Taiwan over 10 years ago. He showed excellent slides of the Golden Poeker parentage and subsequent progeny and seemingly endless variation in flower size, shape, color and spot size and number as well. The fact that Tom Ott is an AOS judge gave the audience insight into what qualities a judge looks for in a flower to award a plant. Many thanks for his and his wife Mary's willingness to travel this far on a Sunday afternoon. He generously donated his $100 honorarium to the MoBot judging Center.

Tom Bogard generously donated some Bulbophylum seedlings that needed homes and Kris Leech donated a great large Phaius for auction.

Next Meeting

The next meeting will be on Sunday, October 9, 2005, at 4:00 P.M., at Rock Quarry House. Howard Wilson will present a brief general presentation on phrags. Howard and Mona Laird will then discuss phrag cultural requirements and mixes and will describe their successes and failures with phrags. Members and visitors are invited to participate in the discussion. The club purchased a light meter for members to borrow so they can measure the light intensities at various times of the day in whatever growth conditions they have. In addition we will talk about cold treatment of plants to induce flowering...ie. how long do I leave my cymbidium outside and what I do to get rid of any summer visiors in the growing medium that want to come inside for the winter too.

Divisions from Tom Dundon's collection will be available at the meeting. Unnamed varieties may be had for a small donation and named varieties will be sold at a nominal price.

Please bring plants for Show-and-Tell, to show off, ask for cultural advice, and/or to ask about problems! Also bring in any divisions or plants that need new homes! Yummy snacks are always welcome, too!

Directions: (Perhaps more helpful than the map!) Rock Quarry House is at Rock Quarry Park, 2002 Grindstone. To get there from Stadium, either 1) take Old 63 south to the round-about, turn right onto Bearfield, turn right at the first stoplight onto Grindstone. Rock Quarry Park/House will be on your LEFT before you get to Rock Quarry Rd. or 2) from Stadium, take Rock Quarry Rd. south, turn LEFT onto Grindstone. Rock Quarry Park/House will be on your RIGHT before you get to Bearfield. or 3) from Stadium take Providence south to Nifong. Turn LEFT on Nifong, go past Rock Quarry Rd and Rock Quarry Park/House will be on your RIGHT before you get to Bearfield.

Rock Quarry Park is on the south side of Grindstone at the top of a hill between the Rock Quarry and Bearfield stop lights. There is a not-very-obvious skinny driveway and a brown sign on the hill that says Rock Quarry Park, 2002 Grindstone Ave. Follow the driveway to Rock Quarry House.
