How to make your own ant bait: Get a pound package of paraffin wax (canning wax). Melt a 1/4-pound slab in a double boiler, or in a kitchen pot placed inside a larger one with somewater in it. When the wax has melted, add 1/4 cup of granulated sugar and 4 ounces of boric acid powder, which is obtainable at any drugstore. Stir the ingredients until they are thoroughly blended with the hot wax. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan to form a layer of 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch thick. While the wax is still quite soft, score its surface fairly deeply to form squares measuring approximately 1 1/4 inches. When the wax has hardened completely, remove it from the pan and break it into squares. Distribute the wax squares widely throughout your greenhouse. Water, fertilizer and other chemicals will not reduce the material's effectiveness and it will last for at least a year. Although household pets are unlikely to find this bait tempting, take precautions. Any surplus squares can be stored in a tin or jar for later use. (From Orchids,Vol. 67, Issue 2, Page 98) |
